Class of 1970

I’m meeting my Phi Delt roommate Rich (“Gape”) Rasmussen (1970) at Homecoming this year. Hoping to see Mike Smith, Charlie Hood, Dale Herring, Derek Rainey, and anyone else from that era who may be around. Here is a recent photo of Michigan Phis from the early 1970’s: Pat Shea, Frank Lucido, Gape, and me.

I bought Michigan football season tickets 3 years ago (with “”Gape”” Rich Rasmussen 1970 and another Boulder Michigan alum) from a woman I met flying from Colorado to the Ohio State game. Since then, I have joined Gape and other Phis (Bruce Baughman, Bill Keating, Mike Smith and Charlie Hood) for one or two games a year. I hope to do the same this year (probably Homecoming). In Colorado (Boulder, where I have lived for 31 years and where I am retired), I see Chick Dobson fairly regularly, and I also see Pat Shea, Ralph Farley and Jim Dost occasionally.

Building on the memories of Alan Marble (75), I too remember the Fishbowl events as well as freezing in THE Mud bowls.
My oscars were the smarter of the two fish. They even jumped from the tank to grab goldfish dangling from the mouth of Tom Bode (76). One of my many fond memories occurred on the intramural field during one of our football games. We had a break in the action and Alan Marble noticed the Great Dane mascot of the XChi’s at the other end of the football field. He commented that there was a “moose” and had Paul Tomashefski (75) bend over so Alan could “figuratively” brace his musket on Paul’s back to shoot the “moose”. Alan made the sound of a gun shot and as if on que, the dog/”moose” lied down. This was 100 yards away…. the coincidence was enough that Paul and I were on the floor as well, laughing, as Alan was doing a makeshift Indian victory dance. I would love to have those carefree days back again. Those of you in the house now, enjoy every moment. They go by fast.

My favorite memories are watching UM beat OSU in 1969 when I was there for an admissions interview, winning (and losing) a couple of Mud Bowls, playing cribbage for hours on end with Paul Tomashefski ’75 in lieu of studying, Fish Bowl I and Fish Bowl II in which my Jack Dempsey Fish squared off against the larger Oscar of Wayne Singer ’75 and emerged the victor in both contests, Fragels and spending my graduation day birding at Point Pelee Provincial Park in Ontario.

I met Gape (Rich Rasmussen ’70) and Bru Baughman ’70 for the MSU-M game last year. We checked out the house, which looks fabulous, where we met Bill Keating ’70 and Charlie Hood ’69. All of us met Mike Smith for lunch before heading to Charlie’s friend’s tailgate and a great Blue victory. Out in Colorado, I see Chick Dobson ’70 fairly regularly and Ralph Farley ’71 and Pat Shea ’71 at least a few times a year. My daughter and her family live in California, not too far from Anteater (Frank Lucido ’70) whom I visit there and who visits Colorado twice a year.

With 4 children from 2 to 17, no chance of retirement. I’m still a corporate securities lawyer with Mayer Brown in the Houston office. I’ve lived in Houston for the past 30 years. I still keep up with Mark Joliat (Jols) – we’ve gone with our boys on vacations – and am looking forward to lunch next week with Dan Gunsett (Gunner). If any of you are down here in Texas, drop by and I’ll treat you to some real barbecue.

Class of 1975

I retired from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Division, after 29 years as a Michigan conservation officer. I had the privilege of working from Ontonagon County in the western UP to Cadillac to Lansing to Newberry to Bay CIty and back to Lansing, where I retired as Chief of Law Enforcement. It was a great career, populated with some of the greatest, hard-working and dedicated men and women imaginable.

Retirement for the next few months means upland bird and waterfowl hunting with my two Labrador retrievers, Crosby and Chief. We hunt around Lansing, around Benzie County where I have a cabin, the UP when I can get there, and make trips to North Dakota and Iowa….and who knows where else this fall.

I pledged in 1971, witnessed the “great fire” that winter, and moved into 1437 Washtenaw to bare floors with unpainted walls in September of 1973. I roomed with Paul Tomashefski for three years….the world’s worst correspondent in regards to keeping in touch….and have many memories of those turbulent days in Ann Arbor.
