Class of 1950
“I need to inform all Phis that brother Douglas Herrick Wicks, Michigan Alpha, died January 9, 2012 at age 85. He was diagnosed with a jaw tumor last June, decided to go ahead with an operation at Ann Arbor in July but was forewarned he had a 30% chance for survival. He appeared to be making a good recovery last fall, but slipped away. He was a constant cigarette smoker. Doug and I were good hunting and trout fishing companions for 65 years starting in 1947 when we both joined Michigan Alpha. We made seven extensive hunting trips together to Western States and Alberta, Canada for elk, bighorn sheep, mule deer, and whitetail deer.
Douglas was an outstanding athlete, a very good water skier, loved good Dixieland music, was a joy to watch on the dance floor, could rattle off more indecent jokes than anyone else I’ve known, and had a good head for the insurance business. He was house manager at Michigan Alpha about 1949. Doug was a great friend and I miss him.
P.S. Our guide in Wyoming said Doug was the only hunter he’d seen who put successive shots with his .270 Winchester rifle in the same hole on the 100 yard practice range!

Class of 1955
During Christmas holidays ’07 Lynn and I celebrated our 50th anniversary by taking our 17 family members on a cruise. I teach part-time at area colleges as their need arises and we continue to travel US & international and keep busy as volunteers having served in India & Ukraine and at Montreat, NC. Keep in touch with Tim Reiman, Punky Boylan, & Howard Gordy.
We live in Danville, KY which is “EZ off & EZ on” from I-75. In AA from time to time to visit son (UM grad) and his family. GO BLUE!!!!

Class of 1953
After graduation spent 2 years in the U.S. Navy serving on a fleet oiler out of Norfolk, VA. Then joined Sikorsky Aircraft for 5 years. IN 1960 formed my own company producing parts for Sikorsky and Bell helicopters. The company now employs 50 people and builds a wide range of parts for the Army Blackhawk and other military and commercial models. My oldest son, an aeronautical engineer, now runs the company. After 4 years of extensive travel across six continents with my lovely wife, Doris, I decided it was time to start a new business. No sooner had we started than the economy went south so we now have an immense marketing challenge. Tune in next year for the outcome.

Naval Officer-CVA-33 2 years.Land department of Std Oiul -Denver,Co Busmarck,ND and Casper,WY till 1960-Workeaad as a stockbroker for 35 years with three large firms-and for 18 as an independent with Raymond James and Cantella & CO/Boston-Living in Tulsa,Ok fro 35 years and La Jolla,CA for 8 years and Basking Ridge,NJ for 4.5 years.Retired but still registered with a couple of clients.

Class of 1950
The annual opener of the 1949 trout opening (last Saturday in April) was coming up and brothers Robert Spry (dec.), Douglas Wicks and I, along with our friend Philip Stirdivant, Jr. (dec.) of Theta Chi, decided to go to Baldwin MI. We rented canoes and floated from M-37 down to Bowman’s Bridge on the Pere Marquette River. The river was up somewhat, and the bigger brown trout were out of their hides in their feeding lanes looking for worms, etc., floating down. We hit it just right and took two coolers full of browns–10 inches to 18 inches long–just outstanding, beautiful trout! After leaving some of our bountiful catch with our parents, we brought back to Ann Arbor much of the same and invited our girlfriends to partake of a great trout fish-fry and barbecue at the Arboretum. This is an outstanding memory for me in my 70+ years of trout fishing in many places, in a number of states. I greatly enjoy, reliving in my memory, those wonderful college years, 1946-1950, at Univ. of Michigan. I miss every brother who was there: outstanding individuals!

I am now retired, living with my wife, Jo,in a continuing care retirement community completely independent. It is located in Laurinburg, NC. Our eldest step-granddaughter will give us our first great-granddaughter in August. Our oldest two grandchildren will graduate from college next spring. The elder, our granddaughter, will then marry in June, 2009. I have enjoyed continuing on my former company’s, Mutual of Detroit Insurance Co., board of directors. We’re only 35 miles south of Pinehurst, NC so if any brothers get down this way, give us a call.

I was a Naval Officer-CVA-33 for two years. I worked at the Land department of Std. Oil, Denver Co., Busmarck,ND and Casper,WY till 1960. Then I worked as a stockbroker for 35 years with three large firms; and for 18 years as an independent with Raymond James and Cantella and Company in Boston. I Lived in Tulsa,OK for 35 years and La Jolla,CA for 8 years and Basking Ridge, NJ for 4.5 years. I am retired but still registered with a couple of clients.

Thomas Don Shreffler ’51 lives nearby, and we often reminisce about how fortunate we were to have been associated with such a wonderful group of fellows. We wouldn’t have had it any other way.

I spend time in Stuart, FL where I see law school roommates Lawrence “”Jim”” (Flint) Hicks Jr. ’51 and John “”Jack”” Kunkle ’49 (Pittsburgh) and play cards with a couple of Phi Delts from Wisconsin. My two sons Doug 76 and Bruce 78 were Phis at Michigan; grandson Cameron ’08 is currently there.

Dave Dutcher ’48 had a sing-a-long in early summer 2006 in his living room in E. Grand Rapids. Some 80-plus people sang from Dave’s song sheet and listened to Dave’s Quintet Dixie band. I missed Dave Dutcher’s 80th birthday party as I was a guest of Beaumount Hospital, having a colonectomy. I held a mini-80th birthday party for Dave with brothers Bruce Dutcher ’50, Richard “”Dick”” Young ’51 and Robert “”Pierre”” McVoy ’51 as I didn’t purposely miss the original blast.

My home overlooks Bear Creek, still a fair trout stream in the midst of a very diversified species mature forest. I frequently have deer, wild turkeys, rabbits and squirrels in my front yard along with a considerable variety of birds that my wife delights in feeding. If I left the doors open, all the wildlife would move right into my house, I’m sure.
